Animasyonlu anlatım

Çizgi film öğretmen and / but / so / because / or bu dersin kendi örnek cümleleriyle sahne sahne anlatır: tahtada formül, renk kodlu cümle parçaları, yanlış → doğru karşılaştırmaları. Anlatım İngilizcedir (İngiliz aksanı). İlk açılışta senaryo hazırlanır (~1 dk), sonra anında açılır.

and, but, or, so, because iki kelimeyi ya da iki cümleyi birbirine bağlayan küçük kelimelerdir (bağlaçlar). Türkçedeki ve, ama, veya / ya da, bu yüzden, çünkü kelimelerine karşılık gelirler. Türkçede sebep bildirmek için çoğu zaman bir ek kullanırız (geç kaldığım için). İngilizcede ise ek yoktur, araya ayrı bir kelime koyarız (because I was late).

A and (ve) / but (ama)

Durum: Ayşe drinks tea. She drinks coffee too. → Ayşe drinks tea and coffee. (Ayşe çay ve kahve içer.) Mert likes football. He doesn't like basketball. → Mert likes football, but he doesn't like basketball. (Mert futbolu sever ama basketbolu sevmez.)

and = ve → benzer bir bilgi ekler.
but = ama / fakat → ikinci bilgi farklıdır ya da birinciye terstir.

Bağlaç	Örnek
and	I've got a cat and a dog.
but	I've got a cat, but I haven't got a dog.

Türkçedeki gibi, bu kelimeler iki cümlenin tam ortasına gelir. but'tan önce genellikle virgül (,) koyarız.

I opened the door and went inside.Kapıyı açtım ve içeri girdim.Özne aynıysa ikinci 'I' kelimesini tekrar etmeye gerek yok.
Elif is tired, but she's happy.Elif yorgun ama mutlu.
We went to Bodrum and stayed in a small hotel.Bodrum'a gittik ve küçük bir otelde kaldık.
The flat is nice, but it's very small.Daire güzel ama çok küçük.
My brother and I play football on Sundays.Ağabeyim ve ben pazar günleri futbol oynarız.'I' her zaman sona gelir: my brother and I.

B or (veya / ya da)

Durum: Garson soruyor: 'Tea or coffee?' Sen ikisinden birini seçeceksin. → or = veya / ya da → seçenekleri gösterir.

Sorularda: Do you want tea or coffee? (Hangisini?)
Olumsuz cümlelerde 'ne … ne …' anlamı verir: I don't drink tea or coffee. (Ne çay ne kahve içerim.)

and	or
I drink tea and coffee. (ikisini de)	Do you drink tea or coffee? (hangisini?)
—	I don't drink tea or coffee. (hiçbirini)

Dikkat: Türkçede 'çay ve kahve içmem' diyebiliriz, ama İngilizcede olumsuz cümlede genellikle or kullanırız.

Are you from Ankara or Izmir?Ankaralı mısın, yoksa İzmirli mi?
We can go by bus or by metro.Otobüsle ya da metroyla gidebiliriz.
Would you like tea or coffee?Çay mı istersin, kahve mi?

C so (bu yüzden) / because (çünkü)

Durum: It was raining. Zeynep took a taxi. → It was raining, so Zeynep took a taxi. (Yağmur yağıyordu, bu yüzden Zeynep taksiye bindi.) → Zeynep took a taxi because it was raining. (Zeynep taksiye bindi çünkü yağmur yağıyordu.)

Aynı iki olay, iki farklı sıra:

sebep → so → sonuç	sonuç → because → sebep
I was hungry, so I ate a sandwich.	I ate a sandwich because I was hungry.

so = bu yüzden → arkasından SONUÇ gelir.
because = çünkü → arkasından SEBEP gelir.

Türkçede genellikle 'Aç olduğum için sandviç yedim' deriz: sebep önce gelir ve '-dığı için' ekini alır. İngilizcede ek yok: because + özne + fiil (because I was hungry).

The traffic was terrible, so I was late.Trafik berbattı, bu yüzden geç kaldım.
I was late because the traffic was terrible.Geç kaldım çünkü trafik berbattı. / Trafik berbat olduğu için geç kaldım.
Sarah is learning Turkish because she lives in Istanbul.Sarah İstanbul'da yaşadığı için Türkçe öğreniyor.
It's cold, so wear a coat.Hava soğuk, o yüzden mont giy.so'dan sonra emir cümlesi de gelebilir.
'Why are you happy?' 'Because my team won!''Neden mutlusun?' 'Çünkü takımım kazandı!'Konuşmada 'Why?' sorusuna kısa cevap Because ile başlayabilir.

D Bir cümlede tek bağlaç yeter

Durum: Türkçede 'Çünkü yorgundum, bu yüzden yattım' diyebiliriz. İngilizcede because ve so aynı cümlede birlikte OLMAZ. Birini seç:

Virgül için kısa kural:

but ve so → önünde genellikle virgül var.
because → önünde genellikle virgül yok.
and → kısa cümlelerde virgül gerekmez.

I was tired, so I went to bed.Yorgundum, bu yüzden yattım.
I went to bed because I was tired.Yorgun olduğum için yattım.
I got up at seven and had breakfast.Yedide kalktım ve kahvaltı yaptım.Özne aynı → 'and'den sonra 'I' tekrar edilmedi.
Mert called me, but I was busy.Mert beni aradı ama meşguldüm.

so → sonuç (ikisi de S ile başlıyor!). because → sebep / çünkü. Sıra şöyle: sebep, so sonuç — sonuç because sebep. Hangi kelimeyi seçeceğini bilmiyorsan Türkçede 'bu yüzden' mi 'çünkü' mü dediğine bak.

Sık yapılan hatalar

Because it was late, so we took a taxi.It was late, so we took a taxi. / We took a taxi because it was late.İngilizcede because ve so aynı cümlede birlikte kullanılmaz. Sadece birini seç.

I don't like tea and coffee.I don't like tea or coffee.Olumsuz cümlede 'ne … ne …' anlamı için and değil or kullanılır.

Do you want tea and coffee? (Hangisini istediğini soruyorsun.)Do you want tea or coffee?Seçenek soruyorsan (hangisi?) or kullanılır. and 'ikisi birden' demektir.

We stayed at home because of it was raining.We stayed at home because it was raining.Arkasından özne + fiil (it was raining) geliyorsa sadece because kullanılır, 'of' eklenmez.
