Bir grubun içinde bir şeyin en olduğunu söylemek için superlative (en üstünlük) kullanırız: the biggest (en büyük), the most expensive (en pahalı). Türkçede sıfatın önüne sadece en koyarız. İngilizcede ise kısa sıfatlara -est, uzun sıfatların önüne most getiririz ve en başa neredeyse her zaman the koyarız.
A the oldest, the cheapest: kısa sıfatlar
Durum: Ayşe, Mert and Can are sisters and brothers. Ayşe is 30, Mert is 25, Can is 19. Ayşe is the oldest. Can is the youngest. (Ayşe, Mert ve Can kardeş. Ayşe en büyük, Can en küçük.)
Üç kişiyi karşılaştırıyoruz ve biri en yaşlı. Kısa sıfatlarda (old, young, cheap, tall) şöyle yaparız:

- older = iki şeyi karşılaştırır (daha yaşlı).
- the oldest = bir grubun içinde birinciyi gösterir (en yaşlı).

B Yazım: the nicest, the biggest, the happiest
Durum: July in Bodrum is hot. August is hot, too. But August is the hottest month. (Bodrum'da temmuz sıcak, ağustos da sıcak. Ama en sıcak ay ağustos.)
hot → hottest: t harfi iki kere yazıldı. Yazım kuralları comparative ile aynıdır (e-41):

C the most expensive: uzun sıfatlar
Durum: There are three phones in the shop: 10,000 lira, 20,000 lira and 45,000 lira. The third phone is the most expensive. (Dükkânda üç telefon var. Üçüncüsü en pahalısı.)
expensive uzun bir kelime. Uzun sıfatlara -est eklemeyiz:

D the best, the worst + in / of
Durum: It's 8 o'clock on Monday morning. Mert is in his car on the bridge. Nothing is moving. 'This is the worst time to drive in Istanbul!' (Pazartesi sabah saat 8. Mert köprüde, arabasında. Trafik hiç ilerlemiyor. 'İstanbul'da araba kullanmak için en kötü zaman bu!')

Türkçede ailemin en büyüğü deriz; -in eki bizi of demeye iter. Ama İngilizcede: the oldest in my family ✓.

Türkçede en tek başına yeter. İngilizcede en iki parçadır: the + (-est ya da most). Kısaca: Kısa sıfat -est alır, uzun sıfat most alır; ikisi asla birlikte gelmez, the ise hep başta durur! Ve good/bad'i unutmayın: the best, the worst.
