must / mustn't / have to
must / mustn't / have to
Animasyonlu anlatım
Çizgi film öğretmen must / mustn't / have to bu dersin kendi örnek cümleleriyle sahne sahne anlatır: tahtada formül, renk kodlu cümle parçaları, yanlış → doğru karşılaştırmaları. Anlatım İngilizcedir (İngiliz aksanı). İlk açılışta senaryo hazırlanır (~1 dk), sonra anında açılır.
must ve have to bir şeyin gerekli ya da zorunlu olduğunu söyler. Türkçedeki -meli / -malı ve -mek zorunda yapılarına benzer. mustn't ise yasak demektir ("yapma!"). Dikkat: don't have to yasak değildir, sadece "gerek yok" demektir.
A must = -meli / -malı
Durum: Elif has an exam tomorrow. She isn't ready. She must study tonight. (Elif'in yarın sınavı var. Hazır değil. Bu gece çalışmalı.)
Elif'e göre çalışmak gerekli, önemli. Bunu must + fiil ile söylüyoruz.
Kural:
- must + fiilin yalın hali → must go, must study
- must'tan sonra to gelmez:
must to go - must -s almaz: he must (
musts) - Herkes için aynıdır: I / you / he / she / we / they must
| Form | Örnek |
|---|---|
| Olumlu | She must study. |
| Olumsuz | You mustn't be late. |
| Soru (az kullanılır) | Must I wear a tie? |
Türkçeyle karşılaştır: Türkçede zorunluluk fiilin sonuna ek olarak gelir (çalışmalı). İngilizcede ise must fiilin önüne gelir: must study.
must çoğu zaman konuşanın kendi fikridir: "Bence bu gerekli." Ayrıca kurallarda, tabelalarda ve güçlü tavsiyelerde de kullanılır.
- I'm very tired. I must go to bed early tonight.Çok yorgunum. Bu gece erken yatmalıyım.Kendi fikrim: bence gerekli.
- You must try the baklava in Gaziantep. It's amazing!Gaziantep'te baklavayı mutlaka denemelisin. Harika!Güçlü tavsiye.
- The office is far. We must leave now.Ofis uzak. Şimdi çıkmalıyız.
- Can must call his mum. It's her birthday today. Can annesini aramalı. Bugün onun doğum günü.he/she ile de must → -s yok.
- Passengers must show their tickets.Yolcular biletlerini göstermelidir.Resmi kural / tabela dili.
B mustn't = yapma! (yasak)
Durum: Mert is in the hospital. There is a sign: NO PHONES. He mustn't use his phone here. (Mert hastanede. Bir tabela var: TELEFON YASAK. Burada telefonunu kullanmamalı.)
Telefon kullanmak burada yasak. Bunu mustn't + fiil ile söylüyoruz.
Kural:
- mustn't (= must not) + fiilin yalın hali
- Anlamı: Bunu yapma! Yapmamak gerekli.
- Okunuşu: /ˈmʌsnt/ → ilk t okunmaz.
| Form | Anlam |
|---|---|
| You mustn't smoke. | Sigara içme! (yasak) |
| We mustn't forget. | Unutmamalıyız! (önemli) |
- You mustn't smoke in the taxi.Takside sigara içmemelisin. (Yasak.)
- We mustn't be late for the meeting.Toplantıya geç kalmamalıyız.

C have to / has to = -mek zorunda
Durum: Zeynep works in a bank. She starts at 8.30. She has to get up at 6 every day. (Zeynep bir bankada çalışıyor. 8.30'da başlıyor. Her gün 6'da kalkmak zorunda.)
Bu zorunluluk Zeynep'in kendi fikri değil; işinden geliyor. Burada have to kullanıyoruz.
Kural: have to + fiil. he / she / it → has to. Soru ve olumsuz, geniş zamandaki gibi do / does ile yapılır.
| I / you / we / they | he / she / it | |
|---|---|---|
| Olumlu | I have to work. | She has to work. |
| Olumsuz | I don't have to work. | She doesn't have to work. |
| Soru | Do you have to work? | Does she have to work? |
Dikkat: does / doesn't'tan sonra have gelir, has gelmez: Does she has to.
must mı, have to mu?
- I must … → Bence gerekli (kendi fikrim).
- I have to … → Kural ya da durum bunu gerektiriyor (iş, okul, doktor, yasa).
- Günlük konuşmada sorularda ve olumsuzda genellikle have to kullanılır.
Okunuşu: have to /ˈhæftə/, has to /ˈhæstə/.
- I have to wear a uniform at work.İşte üniforma giymek zorundayım.Kural işten geliyor.
- My brother has to take two buses to get to university.Kardeşim üniversiteye gitmek için iki otobüse binmek zorunda.

- I must drink less tea. / I have to drink less tea – my doctor says so.Daha az çay içmeliyim. (bence) / Daha az çay içmek zorundayım – doktorum öyle diyor.must = kendi fikrim; have to = dışarıdan gelen zorunluluk.
D mustn't ↔ don't have to
Durum: It's Sunday. Can doesn't have to go to work. He can sleep late. But there's a big match on TV at 8. He mustn't miss it! (Pazar günü. Can'ın işe gitmesine gerek yok. Geç uyuyabilir. Ama saat 8'de televizyonda büyük bir maç var. Onu kaçırmamalı!)
Bu iki yapı çok farklıdır:
| Anlam | Örnek | |
|---|---|---|
| mustn't | Yapma! Yasak. | You mustn't park here. |
| don't have to | Gerek yok. İstersen yap, istersen yapma. | You don't have to come. |
→ mustn't = yapmamak gerekli → don't have to = yapmak gerekli değil
Türkçede de "gelmek zorunda değilsin" ile "gelmemelisin" aynı şey değildir. İngilizcede de öyle!
- You don't have to bring anything. We've got food and drinks.Bir şey getirmene gerek yok. Yiyecek ve içeceğimiz var.
- You mustn't bring your dog into the restaurant.Köpeğini restorana getirmemelisin. (Yasak.)

- This is a quiet carriage. You mustn't talk on the phone.Burası sessiz vagon. Telefonda konuşmamalısın.
E Geçmiş ve gelecek: had to / will have to
Durum: Yesterday the metro wasn't working. Ayşe had to take a taxi. It was very expensive! (Dün metro çalışmıyordu. Ayşe taksiye binmek zorunda kaldı. Çok pahalıydı!)
must'ın geçmiş hali yoktur. Geçmiş için had to kullanırız (herkes için aynı).
| Örnek | |
|---|---|
| Olumlu | She had to take a taxi. |
| Olumsuz | I didn't have to pay. |
| Soru | Did you have to wait? |
| Gelecek | You'll have to speak English. |
Türkçede: zorunda kaldı → had to; zorunda kalacak → will have to.
- We had to wait two hours at the airport.Havaalanında iki saat beklemek zorunda kaldık.
- I didn't have to pay. It was free.Ödemek zorunda kalmadım. Ücretsizdi.
- Did you have to work late yesterday?Dün geç saate kadar çalışmak zorunda kaldın mı?

- You'll have to speak English in your new job.Yeni işinde İngilizce konuşmak zorunda kalacaksın.
mustn't = KIRMIZI IŞIK: Yapma, yasak! don't have to = YEŞİL IŞIK: Gerek yok, sen bilirsin. Ve unutma: must'tan sonra to yok, have'den sonra to var: must go / have to go.
