was / were (idi)
Animasyonlu anlatım
Çizgi film öğretmen was / were bu dersin kendi örnek cümleleriyle sahne sahne anlatır: tahtada formül, renk kodlu cümle parçaları, yanlış → doğru karşılaştırmaları. Anlatım İngilizcedir (İngiliz aksanı). İlk açılışta senaryo hazırlanır (~1 dk), sonra anında açılır.
was / were, am / is / are fiillerinin geçmiş zaman halidir.
A am / is → was, are → were
Şimdi saat 10. Ayşe ofiste: She is at work now. Dün saat 10'da evdeydi: She was at home yesterday.
Şimdi → is, dün → was. Fiil değişti, çünkü zaman değişti.
| Şimdi | Geçmiş |
|---|---|
| I am | I was |
| he / she / it is | he / she / it was |
| you / we / they are | you / we / they were |
→ I, he, she, it → was → you, we, they → were
Türkçede '-dı' eki kelimenin sonuna gelir (evdeydi). İngilizcede ise was / were ayrı bir kelimedir ve öznenin hemen arkasına gelir: She was at home.
- I'm tired now. I was tired last night too.Şimdi yorgunum. Dün gece de yorgundum.
- The tea was very hot.Çay çok sıcaktı.
- Mert and Can were at the match on Saturday.Mert ve Can cumartesi maçtaydı.

- You were late this morning.Bu sabah geç kaldın / kaldınız.you hem 'sen' hem 'siz' demektir → her zaman were.
- My grandmother was a teacher.Büyükannem öğretmendi.
B wasn't / weren't (değildi)
Dün saat 3'te Can, Zeynep'i aradı. Zeynep evde değildi, spor salonundaydı. She wasn't at home. She was at the gym.
Olumsuz yapmak için was / were kelimesinin arkasına not ekleriz. Konuşmada genellikle kısa hali kullanılır.
| Uzun hali | Kısa hali |
|---|---|
| I / he / she / it was not | wasn't |
| you / we / they were not | weren't |
→ was not = wasn't → were not = weren't
Türkçede: evde değildi. İngilizcede: wasn't at home. 'not' her zaman was/were'den sonra gelir.
- I wasn't hungry at lunch.Öğle yemeğinde aç değildim.
- The traffic wasn't bad this morning.Bu sabah trafik kötü değildi.
- They weren't at the wedding.Onlar düğünde değildi.
