Bir yerde bir şeyin var olduğunu söylemek için İngilizcede there is (tekil) ve there are (çoğul) kullanırız. Türkçede var / yok deriz ve bu kelime cümlenin sonuna gelir: Masada bir bardak çay var. İngilizcede ise there is / there are cümlenin başına gelir, yer genelde en sona: There's a glass of tea on the table.

A There is … / There are … (… var)

Ayşe'nin mutfağı. There's a teapot on the cooker. There are two glasses on the table. (Ocakta bir çaydanlık var. Masada iki bardak var.)

Burada teapot tek bir şey → there is. glasses birden fazla → there are.

  • Konuşmada genelde kısa hâli there's kullanılır.
  • there are yazıda kısaltılmaz.
  • Sıra farkı: Türkçe [yer] + [şey] + var → İngilizce There is/are + [şey] + [yer]. Bahçede bir kedi var. → There's a cat in the garden.
  • There's a bakery at the end of our street.Sokağımızın sonunda bir fırın var.
  • There are 25 students in my English class.İngilizce sınıfımda 25 öğrenci var.25 öğrenci → çoğul → there are

B There isn't … / There aren't … (… yok)

Mert yeni bir mahallede oturuyor. Sokak çok sessiz. There isn't a supermarket. There aren't any cafés. (Süpermarket yok. Hiç kafe yok.)

Olumsuz yapmak için is / are kelimesinden sonra not ekleriz. Çoğulda genelde any (hiç) de kullanırız.

Başka bir yol: there's no / there are no = hiç … yok.

  • There aren't any buses. = There are no buses.
  • Dikkat: no ile birlikte not kullanmayız. (There aren't no… yanlış!)
  • There isn't a cash machine in this village.Bu köyde bankamatik yok.
  • There aren't any taxis at the station.İstasyonda hiç taksi yok.
  • There isn't any bread for breakfast.Kahvaltı için hiç ekmek yok.bread sayılamaz → isn't any
  • There are no empty seats on the metro.Metroda hiç boş yer yok.are no = aren't any

C Is there …? / Are there …? (… var mı?)

Soru yapmak için is / are kelimesini there'ın önüne alırız (e-02'deki gibi yer değiştirme).

Zeynep yeni ofisini anlatıyor: There's a new coffee machine in our office. It's very good! (Ofisimizde yeni bir kahve makinesi var. Çok iyi!)

  • Bir şeyden ilk kez bahsederken → there is (var).
  • Sonra aynı şeyi anlatırken → it is (o).

Sayıyı sormak için: How many + çoğul + are there?

  • How many rooms are there in your flat? (Dairende kaç oda var?)
  • Cevap: There are four.
  • Sıraya dikkat: How many rooms there are? değil → are there.
  • There's a new restaurant in Kadıköy. It's really nice.Kadıköy'de yeni bir restoran var. Gerçekten güzel.ilk kez: there's; sonra: it's
  • How many players are there in a football team? — There are eleven.Bir futbol takımında kaç oyuncu var? — On bir.
  • How many people are there in your family?Ailende kaç kişi var?
  • There's a message for you. It's from Can.Sana bir mesaj var. Can'dan.
  • It's cold today.Bugün hava soğuk.Burada 'var' anlamı yok → there is değil, it is.

Türkçede var / yok görünce aklına hemen there is / there are gelsin! Sırayı ters çevir: Türkçe [yer] + [şey] + var → İngilizce There is/are + [şey] + [yer]. Masada bir kitap var. → There's a book on the table. Ve unutma: 'var' anlamında have kullanma!
