Animasyonlu anlatım
Çizgi film öğretmen Past simple or past continuous? when / while bu dersin kendi örnek cümleleriyle sahne sahne anlatır: tahtada formül, renk kodlu cümle parçaları, yanlış → doğru karşılaştırmaları. Anlatım İngilizcedir (İngiliz aksanı). İlk açılışta senaryo hazırlanır (~1 dk), sonra anında açılır.
Bu ünitede past simple (I cooked) ile past continuous (I was cooking) tenslerini aynı cümlede birlikte kullanmayı öğreneceksin. Uzun süren bir eylemin ortasında kısa bir olay olduğunda ikisi birlikte gelir: I was cooking when the phone rang. Türkçede bu, -iyordum ile -dı arasındaki farka benzer: Yemek yapıyordum, telefon çaldı. when genellikle -dığında / -ınca, while ise -ırken demektir.
A Uzun eylem + kısa olay
Durum: Ayşe was cooking dinner. At 7 o'clock the phone rang. → Ayşe was cooking when the phone rang. (Ayşe yemek yapıyordu. Saat 7'de telefon çaldı. → Ayşe yemek yapıyordu, telefon çaldı.)
Burada iki eylem var:
- Yemek yapmak uzun sürüyor, devam ediyor → was/were + -ing (past continuous)
- Telefonun çalması kısa, bir anda oluyor → past simple (rang)
Şöyle düşün:
was cooking ════════════════ ↑ the phone rang
Kısa olay, uzun eylemin ortasına giriyor.

Türkçede genelde kısa olayı sona koyarız: Eve yürüyordum, Mert'i gördüm. İngilizcede de aynı sıra çok doğal: uzun eylem + when + kısa olay.
- I was watching the match when the electricity went off.Maçı izliyordum, elektrik kesildi.İzlemek uzun; elektriğin kesilmesi kısa.
- We were having breakfast when Can arrived.Kahvaltı ediyorduk, Can geldi.
- It was raining when we left the office.Ofisten çıktığımızda yağmur yağıyordu.
- Elif was driving to work when her phone rang.Elif işe arabayla gidiyordu, telefonu çaldı.
- Tom was sleeping when the alarm went off.Alarm çaldığında Tom uyuyordu.
B when + past simple: önce biri, sonra öteki
Durum 1: Mert came home. Then he made tea. → When Mert came home, he made tea. (Mert eve gelince çay yaptı.) Önce geldi, sonra çay yaptı. İki kısa olay, arka arkaya → iki past simple.
Durum 2: Mert came home. His wife was already making tea. → When Mert came home, his wife was making tea. (Mert eve geldiğinde karısı çay yapıyordu.) Çay yapma zaten başlamıştı, devam ediyordu → past continuous.

Tek kelime fark, ama anlam tamamen değişiyor!
- When the film finished, we went to bed.Film bitince yattık.Önce film bitti, sonra yattık.
- When the film finished, Zeynep was sleeping.Film bittiğinde Zeynep uyuyordu.Zeynep zaten uyuyordu.
- When I saw the price, I said no.Fiyatı görünce hayır dedim.
- When I called Sarah, she was working.Sarah'yı aradığımda çalışıyordu.
- When the teacher came in, the students stopped talking.Öğretmen içeri girince öğrenciler konuşmayı bıraktı.
C while + past continuous
Durum: Can was driving to Kadıköy. He saw an accident. → While Can was driving to Kadıköy, he saw an accident. (Can Kadıköy'e araba sürerken bir kaza gördü.)
while = -ırken / -dığı sırada. Uzun eylemi gösterir, bu yüzden arkasından çoğu zaman was/were + -ing gelir. when ise çoğu zaman kısa olayın önüne gelir (past simple).

Virgül: when/while ile başlayan kısım cümlenin başındaysa, sonuna virgül koy:
- While I was driving, I saw the accident.
- I saw the accident while I was driving. (virgül yok)
Türkçede -ırken kısmı hep başta olur (Araba sürerken kaza gördüm). İngilizcede iki sıra da doğru.
- While I was working from home, the cat sat on my keyboard.Evden çalışırken kedi klavyemin üstüne oturdu.
- I hurt my back while I was playing football.Futbol oynarken belimi incittim.
- While we were waiting for the bus, it started to rain.Otobüs beklerken yağmur başladı.
- Ayşe met her husband while she was studying at university.Ayşe eşiyle üniversitede okurken tanıştı.
- I lost my keys while I was shopping in Bodrum.Bodrum'da alışveriş yaparken anahtarlarımı kaybettim.
D Aynı anda iki uzun eylem
Durum: Last night at 9 o'clock Zeynep was reading. Her husband was watching TV. → While Zeynep was reading, her husband was watching TV. (Dün akşam Zeynep kitap okurken eşi televizyon izliyordu.)
İki eylem de uzun ve aynı anda devam ediyor → ikisi de past continuous.

- We were drinking tea and chatting for hours.Saatlerce çay içip sohbet ediyorduk.
- I got up, had a shower and left the house.Kalktım, duş aldım ve evden çıktım.Arka arkaya kısa olaylar → hep past simple.
Uzun çizgi + kısa ok kuralını hatırla: Uzun süren, devam eden eylem → was/were + -ing (Türkçe -iyordu). Ortaya giren kısa olay → past simple (Türkçe -dı). while = -ırken → arkasından genelde -ing gelir; when = -ınca / -dığında → arkasından genelde kısa olay gelir.
