Present simple or present continuous?

Geniş zaman mı, şimdiki zaman mı?

Çizgi film öğretmen Present simple or present continuous? bu dersin kendi örnek cümleleriyle sahne sahne anlatır: tahtada formül, renk kodlu cümle parçaları, yanlış → doğru karşılaştırmaları. Anlatım İngilizcedir (İngiliz aksanı). İlk açılışta senaryo hazırlanır (~1 dk), sonra anında açılır.

İngilizcede iki farklı 'şimdi' vardır. Present simple (I work) genel olarak, her zaman ya da alışkanlık olarak olan şeyler içindir. Present continuous (I'm working) ise tam şu anda, konuştuğumuz sırada olan şeyler içindir. Dikkat: Türkçede ikisini de çoğu zaman -iyor ile söyleriz (Her gün çalışıyorum / Şu an çalışıyorum). İngilizcede ise ikisi farklıdır.

A Şu anda mı, her zaman mı?

Durum: Ayşe is a teacher. She teaches English every day. But today is Saturday. She isn't teaching now. She's drinking tea in her garden. (Ayşe öğretmen. Her gün İngilizce öğretir. Ama bugün cumartesi. Şu an ders vermiyor. Bahçesinde çay içiyor.)

Şimdi kurala bakalım:

  • teaches → genel bilgi, her zaman böyle (onun işi)
  • is drinking → tam şu anda oluyor

Kısaca: Her zaman → work(s). Şu an → am/is/are + -ing.

  • I work in an office, but today I'm working from home.Bir ofiste çalışırım ama bugün evden çalışıyorum.
  • Mert drives a taxi. Right now he's driving to the airport.Mert taksi şoförü. Şu anda havalimanına gidiyor.
  • It often rains in November. Oh, it's raining now!Kasımda sık sık yağmur yağar. Aa, şu an yağıyor!
  • Zeynep speaks three languages. At the moment she's speaking German on the phone.Zeynep üç dil konuşur. Şu anda telefonda Almanca konuşuyor.

B Zaman sözcükleri ipucu verir

Durum: My dad reads the newspaper every morning. But at the moment he's watching the football. (Babam her sabah gazete okur. Ama şu anda futbol izliyor.)

every morning → geniş zaman. at the moment → şimdiki zaman.

  • always, usually, often, never gibi sözcükler fiilden önce gelir: She usually goes … (Türkçede de 'genelde gider' deriz, sıra benzer.)
  • Look! / Listen! → bir şey tam şu an oluyor → -ing.
  • We usually have breakfast at eight.Genelde sekizde kahvaltı yaparız.
  • Look! The children are dancing.Bak! Çocuklar dans ediyor.
  • I never drink coffee in the evening.Akşamları asla kahve içmem.
  • Listen! Somebody's knocking on the door.Dinle! Biri kapıyı çalıyor.
  • Elif goes to the gym on Tuesdays.Elif salı günleri spor salonuna gider.

C Sorular: Do you …? / Are you …-ing?

Durum: Tom meets Elif at a café. Tom asks: What do you do? Elif says: I'm a nurse. Then her phone rings. Her friend asks: What are you doing? Elif says: I'm having coffee with Tom. (Tom: Ne iş yaparsın? Elif: Hemşireyim. Arkadaşı: Ne yapıyorsun? Elif: Tom'la kahve içiyorum.)

  • What do you do? = Mesleğin ne?
  • What are you doing? = Şu an ne yapıyorsun?

Kural: do/does + yalın fiil ya da am/is/are + fiil-ing. İkisini karıştırma: Are you like…? ✗ / Do you working…? ✗

D Bu fiiller genelde -ing almaz

Durum: Can likes football. He wants a ticket for the derby. He knows all the players' names. (Can futbolu sever. Derbi için bilet istiyor. Bütün oyuncuların adını biliyor.)

Bu fiiller bir hareket değil; bir duygu ya da düşünce anlatır. Bu yüzden 'şu an' olsa bile -ing almazlar:

like, love, hate, want, need, know, understand, remember, believe, mean

Türkçede 'Anlıyor musun?', 'İstiyorum', 'Biliyorum' deriz ama İngilizcede bunlar geniş zaman ile söylenir.

  • What does this word mean?Bu kelime ne anlama geliyor?

-iyor tuzağına düşme! Türkçede 'Her sabah çay içiyorum' deriz ama İngilizcede every morning varsa -ing yok: I drink tea every morning. Kendine sor: 'Bu şey şu an mı oluyor, yoksa genelde mi?' Şu an → am/is/are + -ing. Genelde → I drink / she drinks.

Sık yapılan hatalar

I'm going to work by bus every day.I go to work by bus every day.Türkçede 'her gün gidiyorum' deriz ama 'every day' alışkanlık anlatır → geniş zaman (present simple) kullanılır.
I'm liking this song.I like this song.'like' bir duygudur, hareket değil. like, love, want, know, understand gibi fiiller -ing almaz.
Look! It rains.Look! It's raining.'Look!' bir şeyin tam şu an olduğunu gösterir → am/is/are + -ing.
What do you do now?What are you doing now?'What do you do?' meslek sorar. Şu anki hareketi sormak için 'What are you doing?' kullanılır.
Are you like tea?Do you like tea?Geniş zaman sorusu do/does ile yapılır. 'are' + yalın fiil olmaz.
